Japanese fairy tales
Saru
The Japanese money also known as the macaque in English or nihonzaru in
modern Japanese was the villain in one fairy tale as it demanded that
people give it the offering of one human which it could eat every year.
In this story however the saru is worshiped as a type of deity. The
Saru itself is so large that it takes many hacks with a sword for the
hero to begin to remove the beasts head. As he does so the saru’s
human priests beg the warrior to spare the saru which he only does if
it promises never to eat human flesh again.
